During its centennial birthday party on May 1, 2014, University of Missouri Extension announced a joint partnership with Mizzou Alternative Breaks (MAB) to send students during various weekends to serve throughout Missouri. Our weekend program goal is to give back to our state and serve in all 114 Missouri counties by 2020. As of spring of 2018, Mizzou Alternative Breaks weekend trips have served in 98 Missouri counties.
MAB has a long history of sending passionate, service-minded students across the United States and abroad to serve, and MU Extension has an even longer history of providing Missourians with services that they need. This partnership pairs Mizzou Alternative Break students who have a passion for service with MU Extension field staff across the state who can help direct that passion. For example, one of the weekend trips served with a greenhouse at MU Extension Center in Buchanan County. The goal of this trips was to pair MU agriculture and human environmental sciences students with Buchanan County staff. This allowed MU students to get firsthand experience in their majors while enhancing MU Extension’s capacity to serve the community. Past weekend trips have served with education, health, environmental, youth empowerment, and other community initiatives.
